Dental Laser Drilling: State of the Art with the Latest Generation of Variable Square Pulse Erbium Dental Laser Systems

چکیده
Background and Objectives: The most recent technological breakthroughs incorporated in the latest generation of Variable Square Pulse (VSP) Er:YAG dental lasers involve two additional features: SSP (Super Short Pulse) mode for extremely fine and minimally invasive laser ablation; and MAX mode for maximum optical drilling speeds. The objective of this study was to make a comparison between the two new VSP Er:YAG laser modes and a mechanical handpiece, to test their efficacy in apicectomy procedures. In addition, the safety of the MAX mode was evaluated. Study design/Materials and Methods: Laser drilling speeds on extracted human teeth was measured under different VSP laser mode conditions and compared with the previously published drilling speeds of mechanical handpieces. Electron microscope pictures of the holes made in the hard dental tissue with the Er:YAG MAX mode were also made. Results: The SSP erbium laser mode exhibits the largest single pulse energy drilling efficiency while the treatment procedure with the MAX mode is 1.6 times faster than with a mechanical handpiece. The electron microscope pictures of the ablation holes made with the MAX mode reveal no cracks or thermal damage to the ablated hard dental tissue. Conclusions: The latest two Er:YAG laser modes: the SSP (Super Short Pulse) mode for extremely fine and minimally invasive laser ablation; and the MAX mode for maximum optical drilling speeds, offer superior alternatives to mechanical drills, are more precise and less invasive without sacrificing safety, ease-of use or operating speeds.

Safety Evaluation of High Speed MAX mode Er:YAG Laser Cavity Preparations
Early erbium and CO2 lasers failed to gain wide acceptance in the dental community because their optical drilling speeds were slower in comparison to the mechanical bur. This has changed in the past few years; much faster ablation speeds are now possible and dental lasers with variable square pulse technology even exceed the drilling speeds of conventional burs. In this paper we report on a cli...

Erbium-doped solid-state laser systems have become an established tool in dentistry. The two most commonly used Erbium lasers in dentistry are Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG, with a subtle but important difference in their respective laser wavelengths. There is also an important difference in the type of technology they utilize to energize the flashlamps. The conventional PFN (Pulse Forming Network) pul...

Dentistry has a new weapon in the fight against tooth decay. This ‘light saber’ of dentistry is the erbium laser. The dental laser is the latest modern innovation for the 21st Century. Erbium lasers have proven safe and effective for the removal of tooth decay and cavity preparation, in addition to many soft tissue and hard tissue surgical procedures. The FDA approved the erbium laser for marke...

The past decade has seen a veritable explosion of research into the clinical applications of lasers in dentistry. Although lasers were once regarded as complex technology of limited use in clinical dentistry, dentists have becoming increasingly aware of the usefulness of lasers in the armamentarium of the modern dental practice, where they can be used as an adjunct or alternative to traditional...
متن کاملNonlocal thermoelastic semi-infinite medium with variable thermal conductivity due to a laser short-pulse
In this article, the thermoelastic interactions in an isotropic and homogeneous semi-infinite medium with variable thermal conductivity caused by an ultra-short pulsed laser heating based on the linear nonlocal theory of elasticity has been considered. We consider that the thermal conductivity of the material is dependent on the temperature. The surface of the surrounding plane of the medium is...
